Meet Helpless Hounds Dog Rescue! A very special hound dog rescue providing a second chance for hounds in need all across Oklahoma.
Helpless Hounds is a breed-specific hound dog rescue dedicated to helping hound dogs who are left homeless, no matter what the circumstance. They take in hounds from in public shelters where they are at high risk of euthanasia due to pet overpopulation, hounds given up by their owners because of difficult circumstances, and those in danger of or who have already experienced abuse or neglect. Before Helpless Hounds was founded in 2019, there were no resources dedicated to hound dogs in Oklahoma.
Hounds in their care receive all appropriate veterinary care and treatment. They are placed in nurturing foster homes while they await placement in their permanent homes.
Helpless Hounds is dedicated to placing their rescue hounds in loving, responsible, committed, permanent homes. They work with their prospective adopters to help educate them about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a hound dog into their homes and lives.
Helpless Hounds assists hound dogs in distress without regard to age, or ease of placement. To the extent their finances allow, hounds in the greatest need take priority. Helpless Hounds is able to specifically take in dumped hunting dogs and turn them into sweet pets. They call it Rescue, Rehab, Release.
Helpless Hounds strives to work with area shelters and other rescue organizations to develop a network of supporters and volunteers in order to create a better world for homeless hound dogs.
Helpless Hounds has helped 670 hounds and counting in their two and a half years of being a rescue organization.

A Hound Dog Named Willie
Helpless Hounds truly goes above and beyond when it comes to helping a hound in need…meet Willie…
Willie originally came from a sad situation where he was living life on a chain and had been threatened to be shot in Antlers, OK. Helpless Hounds stepped in and had a foster ready for him in two hours away in Tulsa. However, without prior knowledge of his behavior, when Willie arrived, he was involved in a fight with another dog that caused injuries. With no prior rabies shots from his old home, Willie had to quarantine for 10 days and was out of a foster home due to them having other pups. But Helpless Hounds was not going to give up on Willie! They made an awesome dog room at their office and the team spent all day with him at work. The team would go home, eat dinner, and come back to the office to walk him again and tuck him every night, sometimes even sleeping at the office with him to help his anxiety. Talk about dedication!! This was Willie’s routine for three months until he finally found an amazing FURever home with his FURever dog dad, Kyle.
After the adoption, Helpless Hounds worked closely with Kyle to ensure Willie was successful in his new home. For 3-4 weeks after Willie was adopted Helpless Hounds drove across town three days a week to meet Kyle to pick up Willie and let him come back to his “office” so he would transition better into his new home. The team wanted nothing more than for that to be a successful adoption, and it was!! The care and work Helpless Hounds puts in to help Hounds across Oklahoma is clear. The Hounds in Oklahoma are lucky to have such a dedicated team of people working to give them all a second chance at a happy life!
